ALBERTA'S HELMET LAW

The Government of Alberta struck the right balance with this legislation, says Brent Hodgson, president of the Alberta Off-Highway Vehicle Association.
Head injuries are the number one risk to OHV riders. Making helmets mandatory will mean more riders will stay safe and continue to enjoy riding in Alberta’s beautiful landscapes..

Bill 36, the Alberta Land Stewardship Act and Municipal
Government Act Consequential Amendments

On December 6, 2016, the Alberta legislature took a significant step toward enhancing outdoor safety by passing Bill 36, also known as the Act to Enhance Safety for Off-Highway Vehicles. This monumental legislation, amending the Traffic Safety Act, introduced mandatory helmet requirements for all Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts riding on public lands. Officially effective from May 15, 2017, this law ensures that Alberta aligns with other Canadian jurisdictions in prioritizing the safety of OHV riders through comprehensive helmet legislation. Now, whether you're enjoying a leisurely ATV ride across rural landscapes or engaging in high-octane motocross competitions, wearing a helmet is not just a safety measure—it's the law, safeguarding riders across Alberta's vast and varied outdoor terrains.
