When to Replace Your Motorcycle Tires? FC | Sturgeon County, Alberta | MunroPowersports.com | Munro Industries

Your motorcycle tires are one of the most critical components of your ride. They’re your connection to the road, and ensuring they’re in top condition is not just essential for performance but also for your safety. Many riders often ask, “When should I replace my motorcycle tires?” If you're unsure, don’t worry—you’re not alone! Let’s break it down and talk about the ways you can determine when it’s time to get some fresh tread.

Tread Depth and Tire Wear

Your tire’s tread is designed to grip the road and provide stability, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Over time, this tread wears down, reducing your bike’s handling and braking capabilities. Riding with worn tires is dangerous and could lead to accidents, especially in wet or slick conditions. A general rule of thumb is to check the tread depth regularly. Many tires come with built-in wear indicators—lines or bars within the grooves that show if your tread is too shallow. If these indicators are flush with the tread surface, it’s time for a replacement. Investing in a tread depth gauge or performing the simple penny test can also help you monitor tire wear.

Feeling unsure about how to check the wear patterns on your tires? Check out our detailed guide on tire wear indicators for a step-by-step process!

Age Matters

Even if your tires are not heavily worn, they may still to be replaced due to age. Motorcycle tires degrade over time as the rubber hardens, which reduces their grip. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are over five years old, regardless of tread wear or how much life you have  left in your tire. You can find the tire's age by locating the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits represent the week and year of manufacture. For example, “2419” signifies the tire was made in the 24th week of 2019. If your tire is nearing its expiry, it’s better to be safe than sorry—replace it.

With the recent number of automotive and powersports events increasing annually across the country, you may also want to enter your bike into a local burnout competition and plan to lock in that big "W". After you win you will have an amazing picture to use on your social pages and the prize money is usually enough to buy at least one brand new tire.

Bulges, Cracks, or Unusual Wear

Your tires may look fine at first glance, but small details can signal bigger issues. Inspect your tires for cracks, cuts, bulges, or any irregularities in the tread pattern. Damage caused by hitting potholes or prolonged exposure to the elements can compromise the tire’s integrity, making it unsafe to ride.

What if you have an odd wear pattern developing? It could point to an alignment issue or under/overinflation. Routine inspections and keeping your tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI can save you headaches down the road.
