Where It All Began
The concept of personal watercraft first took shape in Europe during the 1950s with early models known as water scooters. While novel, these prototypes didn’t quite hit the mark in terms of performance or popularity—at least not yet. It wasn’t until the 1960s that a breakthrough occurred, thanks to Norwegian-American inventor Clayton Jacobson II.
A motorcycle enthusiast and thrill-seeker, Jacobson found himself frustrated with the injuries he sustained riding in the harsh terrain of the Mojave Desert. That frustration fueled his imagination, and he set out to design a "water motorcycle" that could deliver the same adrenaline-pumping experience with less risk of injury. Jacobson left his day job to pursue this passion and eventually created prototypes that would revolutionize watersports forever.
Sea-Doo – A Splash into History
Jacobson's breakthrough caught the attention of Bombardier Recreational Products, a company primarily known for its snowmobiles at the time. Partnering with Jacobson, Bombardier unveiled the first-ever Sea-Doo in 1968, a sit-down model developed with his visionary patents. The design, while innovative, was ahead of its time and struggled to gain traction. Production ceased by 1970, but the seed had been planted for what would become a global phenomenon. Fast-forward to today, Sea-Doo remains at the forefront of the PWC market, constantly pushing the boundaries with features like intelligent brake and reverse systems and sporty designs.
Kawasaki’s Jet Ski Revolution
After parting ways with Bombardier, Jacobson licensed his patents to Kawasaki in 1971. By 1973, Kawasaki's engineers had introduced the first stand-up Jet Ski—a game-changing watercraft that would define the next wave (no pun intended) of PWC enthusiasts. The sleek design, marketed as a “Power Ski,” made waves in the watersports scene with its agility and exhilaration.
However, no great story is without conflict. By 1976, Kawasaki severed ties with Jacobson, paving the way for other manufacturers to enter the growing market. Despite the legal battles that followed, the Jet Ski remains iconic, with Kawasaki still producing cutting-edge models to this day.
Yamaha’s Time to Shine
Not one to rest on his laurels, Jacobson later collaborated with Yamaha in 1986, helping them create their renowned Super Jet. This stand-up model quickly made a name for itself as a sleek, performance-driven machine. Throughout the ‘90s, Yamaha solidified its position in the PWC industry, showcasing innovative designs that catered to seasoned riders and newcomers alike. Their dedication to quality and performance continues to make Yamaha a household name in watersports.
PWC in the 21st Century
Over the years, PWCs have transformed into sophisticated machines packed with advanced features. Modern models now include innovations like Bluetooth-enabled sound systems, modular seating options, waterproof storage, and eco-friendly engines that are quieter and more fuel-efficient.
